Evaluating air leakage: Infiltrometry

In order to perform an in-depth analysis of your building’s energy efficiency, we use a device specially designed to evaluate air infiltrations, an infiltrometer.

The infiltrometer is a variable-speed fan mounted on a panel that can be adapted to any of your building’s exterior door openings. This device enables us to:

  • Reduce the pressure inside the building: with the fan on, the internal pressure in the building is gradually lowered, thereby enabling outdoor air to penetrate unsealed openings and cracks.
  • Measure the airflow rate: pressure gauges connected to the fan measure the airflow rate needed to ensure the pressure in the building is constant; as such, we can calculate the building’s resistance to air leaks.
  • Identify the sources of leakage: while the fan is operational, we take you on a tour of your building with a smoke pencil, to locate any air leaks that need to be sealed.
